Tintotem Parade series 3- Observatories 2024
In this third series of seven Tintotems the stacked upcycled painted tin cans have now been combined with stainless steel domestic items such as bowls, teapots, pots and pans and colanders. These investigate how concave and convex forms can both confine and expand space when interacting with different kinds of space, light and shadow. Studio visitors are invited to look into brightly mirrored surfaces that distort space, or peer into dark tunnelled corridors and voids that highlight the different physical, psychological, and emotional experience of 3 dimensional space. The reflective surfaces affirm the viewers own individual presence, in both the space of the sculpture and in the wider surroundings, while at the same time dissolving a sense of self as shifts in scale occur as the body moves around the artworks. Through this vocabulary metaphors and symbolic forms and images are also deliberately generated to include experiences from my own sub-conscious and from the wider world today that a spectator may also recognise.
Comments from the Public have included…..’chunky, sci-fi, aggressive, more like periscopes, daleks, maybe echoing the increasingly militaristic times’ ? ‘seem to have an industrial look, like some strange gas works’, ’Look like hydrant chess pieces’
